Packaged Up Right

The good thing about organic products-especially the ones here on Saffron Rouge-is that in most cases the boxes, bottles and tubes are just as eco friendly as what's housed inside. Jurlique is a great example of this. Their sleek and gorgeous packaging is made up of post-consumer waste. It's all stamped with non-polluting vegetable inks and is absolutely, 100% recyclable. This means that the cute little box the Citrus Hand Cream comes in can go out in the recycling bin with last month's magazines. And the empty glass bottle of Lavender Bath Oil can sit next to the rinsed out spaghetti sauce jar before taking the big trip to the recycling plant. Continued...

Watch Your Mouth

You've heard me delve into my reasons for using organic skincare, organic hair care and even organic cosmetics. So now it's time to talk about toothpaste. Brushing your teeth may not be the most scintillating or exotic thing you'll do all day. But it's definitely one of the most important. I mean for as far back as your memory will reach you can probably remember someone telling you to brush your teeth (whether it's your parents, dentist or perfectly coiffed lady in a commercial). But although conventional toothpastes will scrub your teeth clean, they'll also give you something else-dyes, detergents, sweeteners, abrasives and preservatives. Continued...

Bag It

According to ReusableBags.com more than a billion single-use plastic bags are packed with purchases and handed out every day. Besides multiplying in your house faster than a family of rabbits, these plastic bags do some serious damage to the environment. Creating the bags takes plenty of nonrenewable resources such as petroleum and natural gas. And with the way gas prices are right now, it seems downright stupid to be wasting these precious resources on flimsy little plastic bags. During the manufacturing process, energy is wasted and the air gets polluted with toxic emissions that contribute to global warming. Then comes the aftermath. All of those billions of bags have to go somewhere. And they take up to 1000 years to degrade into the soil (which causes toxic contamination). Continued...

Moms In Toyland

We all know how dangerous some plastic toys can be for our kids. Now the US Congress has finally decided to take action. According to the Environmental Working Group, Congress will soon ban all phthalates from being allowed in children's products.  Of course I've long been a fan and advocate for safe, natural and educational toys. And my favorite destination to get them is Moolka.comContinued...

Finding Purer Produce

All over the place farmers markets have been popping up faster than Starbucks (well, almost). Whether you live in the heart of an urban community like New York City or way out in the country, surrounded by farmland, there's most likely a farmers market within shopping distance. You'll get to experience shopping the way it used to be-person to person, asking questions about the items on display and making genial conversation (instead of watching an uninterested teenager in a vest stack a pyramid of pesticide-coated apples). Everything you buy will be at the peak of freshness too. Just think about a banana shipped from South America. How long has it been since that piece of fruit was actually plucked from the tree?

Natural Therapy With Essential Oils

In a perfect world we'd be feeling perfect all the time. No colds, no flu, no stress, depression or chronic insomnia. After all, those things just get in the way of an already hectic life. But of course the world isn't perfect, and neither are we. And since we can't press a pause button whenever the need arises, we need to find ways to help us cope. And that's where essential oils come in. From calming a cold to helping you finally catch some much needed beauty sleep (instead of thinking about how badly the hallway needs to be painted), simple and essential oils can help. The best part-well, besides feeling better-is knowing that they're pure and healthy. So you won't worry about chemicals, toxins and other bad stuff putting a damper on your wellbeing. Continued...

Eco-Celeb of the Month: Richard Gere

When most people think about Richard Gere they may imagine him as 'that movie star who's all about freeing Tibet'. Yes, that's certainly what he's most famous for, as it's perhaps the cause closest to his heart. And though you'd think that the task of solving the Tibetan crisis would be enough to keep him busy, he also commits himself to the causes of AIDS awareness (in India and throughout the world), cultural preservation and human rights. In fact, looking at the enormity of what Gere does, it's surprising that he has time leftover for a film career. Continued...
