Hey Baby

September 25, 2008

Having a baby is complicated. I've had three, so I can tell you with all authority that life with little ones would be so much easier if they came with instruction manuals. Since we aren't that lucky, it's simply a game of trial and error. But one thing that you don't want to error in is using harsh products and chemicals on baby's super new and super delicate skin. That's why organic baby care is the only option for me. It's gentle, safe and soothing.

When you're choosing between taking your baby out in the cold to give you both much-needed fresh air or cooping her up inside all the time, you're certainly going to choose the great outdoors. Somewhere between popping on the baby hat and making sure the diaper is clean I rub on a bit of the Erbaviva Baby Lip & Cheek Balm. It shields cheeks, lips and other areas from dry or cold conditions. It smells (and tastes) yummy-which is a bonus if you're using it on a finicky toddler. My other favorite is Balm Balm's certified organic and 100% natural Baby Balm. It's gentle enough for newborns and it soothes or prevents chapped cheeks and lips, treats cradle cap and moisturizes dry patches. I always keep one the changing table.

Another changing table essential is a diaper cream. I especially love Weleda's Diaper Care that effectively relieves diaper rash and irritation with healing zinc oxide and soothing Calendula. It's great for cuts and scrapes as well.

Bath time is always a special way to bond with your baby. But if baby doesn't agree, you may simply want to get things done quickly. The Weleda Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash is the ideal way to gently clean your baby from head to toe. The softening formula uses extremely mild plant-based cleansers and extracts that won't strip away moisture or irritate eyes. If you prefer a separate shampoo and cleanser, try Erbaviva's Baby Shampoo and Baby Washbag. The shampoo uses Olivoil Glutinate (made from olive oil and wheat proteins) to nurture that baby-fine hair. And I especially love the light fragrance that's created with a calming combination of Lavender and Chamomile. The Baby Washbag helps retain baby's natural oils that are essential to maintain hydration. And it's gentle enough for newborns. The soap-free formula is solely comprised of natural herbs. They're placed inside an unbleached muslin sachet that you dip in the bath before gently rubbing directly onto baby's skin. It's simple and genius.

Whether you want to treat your baby to a soothing massage or moisturize areas that may be dry and flaky, the Baby's Calming Massage Oil from Jurlique what you want to use. Safflower, Macadamia and Jojoba oils naturally and delicately help hydrate. And an organic fusion of Chamomile and Lavender will help relax your baby and ease her to sleep. And when baby sleeps, you get to sleep. which is something a parent can always use more of.
