Sheer Summer Color

June 17, 2008

I'm never heavy-handed when it comes to makeup, and this is especially true during the summer. Who wants to wear layers upon layers of caked-on cosmetics when it's hot outside? Plus summer calls for everything to be a little easier. So my take on summer color is that it should be sheer and simple. And when I say color, I really mean it. You can hold on to your tried-and-true neutrals. But nothing goes with bare shoulders, strappy sandals and summer skin like color. The trick is finding shades that you love and keeping it super sheer.

Start your face with an easy tinted moisturizer (and forget about a full face of foundation) like SukiColor's Tinted Active Moisturizer. Then get a faux glow that will have everyone believing you've been lounging in the islands (instead of the office) with Dr. Hauschka Bronzing Powder. It's my favorite because the golden hue realistically delivers a healthy-looking bronze complexion. If you're already bronzed enough or simply prefer to let your pale perfection take the spotlight, use Jurlique's Citrus Silk Finishing Powder to rebalance oil and reduce shine. Using a natural bristle brush instead of a powder puff will create a more sheer finish.

Now we come to the really fun part. Trust me, I know you love your beloved taupe or beige or whatever. But true color is so much fun. Plus you can always wash it off if you don't like what you see, so there's really no reason not to experiment. A pretty pop of color on your eyes or lips can make you feel more youthful, vibrant and fun. I love NVEY ECO Organic Eye Shadows. They're long wearing and come in 20 of the most irresistible colors imaginable. Apply one light layer of 151 (a shimmering rose), 160 (a shimmering turquoise) or 165 (a light lime green). Even if you've been trapped in a neutral world, these shades can be worn so sheer that they won't throw you for a loop.

But if you can't see yourself wearing blue shadow, use a liner instead. First apply Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadow Solo in 02 (a warm shimmering light brown). Then rim your lids with the Dr. Hauschka Kajal Eyeliner in Epressivo (a slate blue). You'll add a dose of eye-brightening color without feeling like Bozo.

Continue exploring color with your lips. Gloss is great all year round, but especially in the summer. NVEY ECO Organic Lip Lustre is part gloss and part moisturizer. It comes in eight gorgeous shades that are enriched with orange essential oil. If you're ready to embrace color try Fresh (a coral shimmer) or Temptress (a shimmering hot pink). But if you're not quite ready-or if you're really going bold with colorful eyes-try Amour Rose (a sheer light pink) or Nude.

Another great lip option is the nourishing Dr. Hauschka Lipstick. Make it sheer for summer by picking your favorite of the 12 shades. Then apply like normal, blot with a tissue and apply your favorite clear lip balm. One of my favorite new products for lips is the Pure Cream Stain by SukiColor, The 100% pure pigments soothe, protect and hydrate and can also be worn on your cheeks. Apply a little or a lot, depending on how bold you're willing to go. Dahlia, Nectar and Vermillion are great, colorful choices for summer. Just remember to have fun experimenting. After all, makeup should never be taken too seriously.
