Night Skin Care FAQ

Should I use a product specifically formulated for nighttime use? Can I still use a nighttime product during the day?

Yes. Some night products contain concentrated ingredients that specifically help skin repair and rejuvenate itself during the night. And during the day it’s better to use products that give your skin more moisture and protection from the external elements while priming it for a smoother makeup application. This category contains only those items that are designed for nighttime use.

What should my nighttime skin care routine look like?

Begin by surface cleansing to remove dirt and makeup (you may need a separate makeup remover) followed with a facial toner for extra hydration. Next you can add a facial oil, serum or moisturizer (preferably a night-specific option) and an eye cream. However some brands advocate that the skin benefits from not using moisturizers at night in order to properly breathe and benefit from its natural regeneration process. Instead they suggest using a spray toner or treatment, or a serum. Kirstin – founder of Saffron Rouge, follows this philosophy and doesn’t use a moisturizer most nights. The preference is yours.

Should I be using a heavy cream at night, or something lighter?

Many experts believe that the skin goes through a rejuvenation process at night and needs to be left free to ‘breathe’, so therefore it’s recommended that you choose lighter options at night. Regularly using heavy moisturizers at night can cause your skin to become dependant on this external product. Over time it will slow down producing its own moisture, causing further problems. And although she usually forgoes a night product, when she does use one Kirstin’s stance is the lighter the better and uses face oil capsules. From lightest to heaviest here’s how the weight of a product usually breaks down: Facial toners or treatment sprays (ampules), serums or gels, face oils and capsules, lotions and finally creams.

Can I use my daytime moisturizer at night?

Yes, but there are some wonderful rejuvenating night specific moisturizers available which are more appropriate. Try to avoid anything really heavy at night. And remember that some experts believe in not moisturizing at night at all.
