Our Review

There are arguably more exciting things than toothpaste, but we all use it, and given the choice, I'm certain we'd all prefer one without the nasty chemicals some mainstream brands contain. My favorite is the Plant Gel Toothpaste because of the light flavor. This is a great choice for sensitive gums because natural Silica non-abrasively cleans the teeth while Chamomile and Myrrh ease sensitivities and inflammation.

Weleda's toothpastes were developed with dentists and contain herbal extracts and essential oils - no unnatural harsh ingredients, fragrances, bleaches or chemical preservatives. Unlike some 'natural' brands, Weleda toothpastes do not contain fluoride or sodium lauryl sulfate.

Fluoride is a somewhat controversial ingredient - most likely because it is often used in the treatment process of drinking water. Teeth need it, but if taken in excess it can pose health risks. Fluoride is found naturally in mineral water in its natural form, which is a safe way to get it. If you think you need extra fluoride, speak with your dentist who may recommend it.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is often found in 'natural' toothpastes is a toxic chemical detergent. SLS is usually derived from petroleum, or 'from coconuts' (the process involves treating the coconut oil with sulfuric acid.) SLS may cause eye irritation, scalp scurf (which is similar to dandruff), skin rashes and other allergic reactions. Sodium lauryl sulfate is found in most shampoos in the mainstream market, and it is certainly not something you want in your mouth. Saffron Rouge does not carry any products that contain SLS.

Other Weleda toothpastes

Pink Toothpaste - Another chalk-based toothpaste. This one contains Ratanhia, which is an astringent that eases swelling and redness, and helps strengthen the gums and prevent bleeding. It also tightens fine veins and tissues and helps prevent tooth decay. Myrrh helps eliminate bacteria.

Calendula Toothpaste - This is a great choice if you are taking homeopathic medicine because it doesn't contain peppermint oil. This is a chalk-based toothpaste, and may take some getting used to. Biodynamic Calendula soothes and comforts the gums while licorice and fennel refresh the mouth.

Salt Toothpaste - It's funny men always seem to gravitate towards this toothpaste. A mix of baking soda and ultra fine salt help reduce tartar build-up, tone gums and leave the teeth gleaming.

Children's Tooth Gel - A favorite in our household - in fact I often have to hide it from my kids because they like it so much they try to eat it. Finely ground Silica cleanses gently while Calendula soothes the mouth, and natural spearmint and fennel provide a fresh, pleasant taste â?" perfect for those first delicate teeth. And safe (although not recommend!) to swallow.
